A Walk on the Wilde Side: A Stroll through Oscar Wilde's London

2024 marks the 170th anniversary of the birth of Oscar Wilde: aesthete, writer, wit, social analyst, queer, martyr & the first modern celebrity..

Join award winning Arts Society Lecturer, London Blue Badge Guide (and Oscar devotee) Simon Whitehouse as he takes us back in time to the 'naughty nineties' & to Oscar Wilde's London.

Starting at Green Park, we explore elegant aristocratic Mayfair which provides the backdrop for many of Oscar's plays and characters.  We continue through Royal St James to visit the site of the fabled St James Theatre which saw the premiere of Oscar's greatest play The Importance of Being Earnest'.

After a lunch break near Trafalgar Square, we'll continue through Covent Garden to see Maggi Hambling's wonderful artistic homage to Oscar &the former site of Oscar's first London home.

Along the way, we'll discuss the London of the 'naughty nineties' & get a taste of Oscar's artistic world &his hedonistic, luxurious lifestyle in the form of galleries, shops, restaurants & hotels that still survive today...

Speaking of which, our walk ends outside one of London's newest hotels. Once the site of the Bow Street Police Station, this is where Oscar stood in the dock to face the most shocking and scandalous trial of the 19th century.

Date: 4th June 2024

Meet: 11 am Green Park Station (south side in the park by

the fountain)

Walk ends: Covent Garden Tube approx. 3.30 pm

This visit will be restricted to 25 people and we anticipate strong

support
